My
Son sanctuary belongs to Duy Phu village, Duy Xuyen
district, Quang Nam province, about 70km southwest of Da Nang City and 40km
from Hoi An City. It is a large complex of Cham Pa temples with more than 70 architectural works dedicated to
the worship of the god Shiva. It was constructed in the 4th century under
the reign of Bhadravarman used to organize religious ceremonies for kings of
the ruling dynasties of Cham Pa, as well as a burial place for Cham royalty
members and national heroes. People usually compare this sanctuary with some
famous temple complexes in Indochina such as Borobudur of Java in Indonesia,
Angkor Wat of Cambodia, Bagan of Myanmar and Ayutthaya of Thailand. The temples
in My Son have the same structure: built on a quadrate foundation, comprise
three parts( base tower, body tower and top tower), the simply furniture, the
roofs cover with gold or silver and have no windows. However, the highlight
style of the architecture and sculptural decoration of the My Son temples
derives directly from India. In addition, My Son sanctuary consists of many objects
that have cultural value. Therefore, My Son was recognized as a world heritage
site by UNESCO in 1999.
